I don’t live in either Canada or the US, but I always enjoy this time of year online. Everything feels a little lighter, everyone is in a summer-y mood, there are endless BBQ and slaw recipes and patriotic tablescapes, not to mention all the summer sales and the happy-smiling-shiny people that make you briefly forget the unrelenting sh!t storm of current events. Guyana also celebrates Caricom Day, which is also a National Holiday. It falls on the first Monday of July, so it coincides nicely with the online mood. I even forgot that we had a long weekend so I’m currently one of those happy-smiling-shiny people I just told you about.
I came across a random Canada Day article and in the headline, they mentioned “the 6ix”. Yes, it’s a nickname for Toronto, but why? Then I started thinking about all of the other nicknames, and well, hello rabbit hole! I’ve compiled the most popular ones into a a little table below for your viewing pleasure.

The New York Times: 36 Hours 150 Weekends in the USA & Canada. I bought the original first edition in 2011 but there’s an updated 2014 2nd edition. Basically, the book gives you a cool city-by-city itinerary if you only have 36 hours. Pretty cool, right? Perfect for any upcoming weekend you may have.
Waypoint:
43.6777° N, 79.6248° W. These are the coordinates for the Pearson International Airport. Why? Umm, Toronto is pretty big and this location actually features in this post.
So Happy Canada Day / 4th of July / Caricom Day, or just simply Weekend! Hope it’s a good one.

The 6ix / YYZ / Hogtown / Tdot
I used to live in Canada (not in Toronto though) and I had no idea about this 🙂
#flyawayfriday
Lol same actually! I was much younger then so maybe I just never noticed it. Lol
I have never heard of any of these either! I love learning new things like this!
I did get taught how to pronounce Toronto when we visited though…, to me it sounded more like “tronno”
Thanks! I love cool little facts as well. I also saw another spelling of the pronunciation as “te rawna” Lol
Or maybe even cha-ronno /cho-ronno!?
Lol you’ve got me saying these out loud! And yes I think they can work. Lol
Hogtown! I hadn’t heard that one before. But I had heard about 6ix, I just didn’t know that it originated with Drake. #FlyAwayFriday
I thought Hogtown was actually the name of a specific area in Toronto so I was surprised to learn the history as well!
Interesting! I must not be cool enough to know it’s called the 6ix! I did know that it as called T-DOT and YYZ. #FlyAwayFriday
Lol I only recently learned that nickname, which is what led me to writing about it. So I guess I’m not that cool either heheh
Yes!! Drake’s nickname thanks to our area code 🙂 Toronto is my home and reading articles on the origins of the nicknames is great! I use T Dot:) YYZ – didn’t know people referred to my home city by the airport code! Great post! Thanks so much for joining Fly Away Friday! See you tomorrow 🙂
It’s so exciting to learn more about one of my favorite cities! I had no idea about Drake’s nickname (Janine’s comment above). How cool! Thanks for joining FAF! See you tomorrow! xo
